How to Store Candles So They Last Longer and Burn Better
Most people don't think about candle storage until something goes wrong — the scent has faded before the first burn, the surface has turned white, or the wax has softened and lost its shape. None of these are inevitable. They're usually the result of storage conditions that are easy to fix.
Do candles actually go bad?
Candles don't expire the way food does, but their quality does degrade over time. The main issues:
- Scent fades — fragrance oils slowly evaporate even before the candle is lit
- Bloom appears — a white, chalky film on the wax surface, caused by temperature fluctuation (harmless, but affects appearance)
- Color changes — UV exposure causes dyes and some fragrance compounds to break down
- Wick performance drops — moisture absorption makes wicks harder to light and less consistent
A well-stored candle can maintain its quality for 1–2 years. Poorly stored, the same candle might lose most of its scent within a few months.
The main enemies of candle quality
Heat is the most damaging factor. It softens wax, accelerates fragrance evaporation, and can cause containers to warp or wicks to shift. Soy wax is particularly sensitive — it has a lower melting point than paraffin and will soften at temperatures that feel comfortable to humans. Light — especially direct sunlight — degrades fragrance molecules through UV exposure and causes color fading. Even strong artificial light over extended periods has a similar effect.
Air allows fragrance oils to slowly volatilize off the wax surface. Every hour a candle sits uncovered and unused, a small amount of scent is lost.
Humidity affects the wick. A wick that has absorbed moisture will struggle to light cleanly and may produce uneven flame and more soot when it does. The National Candle Association recommends keeping candles away from humid environments as a standard safety and performance practice.
How to store candles properly
Control the temperature. The ideal storage range is 60–75°F (15–24°C). Anywhere with significant temperature swings — kitchens, bathrooms, cars, windowsills — will shorten candle life. A drawer, cabinet, or interior shelf is usually fine.
Keep them out of direct light. Sunlight is the fastest way to fade both color and scent. Store candles away from windows, or keep them in their original packaging when not in use. Dark glass jars offer some natural UV protection.
Put the lid on. If your candle came with a lid, use it between burns. It limits both dust accumulation and fragrance loss. For candles without lids, the original box or a loose wrap of cling film does the same job.
Store upright. Laying candles on their sides puts uneven pressure on the wax and can cause the wick to shift off-center — which leads to uneven burns later. Always store upright.
Separate strong scents. In an enclosed space, candles with very different fragrance profiles can transfer scent to each other over time. If you're storing multiple candles together long-term, keep them in individual packaging.
Long-term storage (6 months or more)
If you're storing candles for an extended period:
- Wrap in the original packaging or acid-free tissue paper
- Place in a sealed box or airtight container
- Store in a cool, dark location — a wardrobe or interior cupboard works well
Avoid the refrigerator. It seems logical, but temperatures below 50°F (10°C) can cause soy wax to crack, and condensation when the candle returns to room temperature can damage the wick and cause the wax to pull away from the jar.
A note on soy wax specifically
Soy wax is more temperature-sensitive than paraffin. It softens more easily in warm conditions and is more prone to frosting — the white crystalline bloom that can appear on the surface after temperature changes. Frosting doesn't affect how the candle burns or smells, but it can be mistaken for a defect. Keeping soy candles at a stable, cool temperature is the most effective way to minimize both softening and frost. For Vesta Ember candles specifically: store with the lid on, away from direct light, and at room temperature. That's it.
