Paraffin
Paraffin is the most widely used candle wax in the world. It's a byproduct of petroleum refining that is cheap to produce, easy to work with, and capable of holding high fragrance loads, which is why it throws scent so strongly.
Strengths:
- Strongest cold and hot scent throw of any wax type
- Takes color and fragrance well
- Widely available at the lowest cost
Limitations:
- Derived from petroleum, which is non-renewable and non-biodegradable
- Burns hotter and faster than plant-based alternatives
- Produces more soot, particularly if the wick isn't properly maintained
- Can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) when burned; however, studies suggest that the levels in ventilated spaces are well below harmful thresholds
Best for: mass-market candles where scent intensity and cost efficiency are the priority.
Soy Wax
Soy wax is made by hydrogenating soybean oil, which converts the liquid oil into a solid wax. Popular in the 1990s as a plant-based alternative to paraffin, soy wax is now the most common wax in the premium and indie candle market.
Strengths:
- Burns cooler and slower than paraffin, extending candle life by 30–50%
- Produces significantly less soot
- Biodegradable and derived from a renewable source
- Good scent throw, particularly for complex fragrance blends
- Easier to clean up with soap and water
Limitations:
- Can develop cosmetic issues like frosting (a white crystalline layer on the surface) — harmless but sometimes mistaken for a defect

Beeswax

- Emits a subtle natural honey scent on its own

Coconut Wax
Coconut wax is made from cold-pressed coconut oil and is the newest of the four main wax types to gain mainstream use. It is often blended with soy or other waxes to improve performance.

- Excellent scent throw — comparable to paraffin, better than soy alone
- Burns very cleanly with minimal soot
- Slow burn rate, similar to soy
- Sustainable and biodegradable
- Smooth, creamy appearance
Limitations:
- Most expensive plant-based option
- Soft texture means it's almost always used in container candles or blended with harder waxes
- Less widely available than soy or paraffin

Which wax should you look for?
For most buyers, soy wax hits the best balance — it burns cleaner than paraffin, has a good scent throw, comes from a renewable source, and is reasonably priced. Coconut wax surpasses soy wax in terms of scent throw and aesthetics, but it is more expensive. Beeswax is the right choice if burn time, minimal processing, and budget aren't constraints. Paraffin remains the dominant choice in the mass market for good reason — it performs, it's cheap, and for occasional use in ventilated spaces, the concerns around it are largely overstated.
As much as the wax itself, everything else in the candle matters: the fragrance formulation, the wick type, and how it's made. A well-made soy candle will outperform a poorly made coconut wax candle in every category.

The short version: paraffin produces the strongest scent but burns the least cleanly. Beeswax lasts the longest but costs the most. Soy and coconut sit in the middle — clean, renewable, and good enough on scent throw for most applications. For everyday use, soy wax remains the most practical choice.
